How to Play Blackjack

1. Betting & The Deal

Before any cards are dealt, you must place your initial bet. In online casinos, this is done by selecting your chip size and placing it in the betting circle within the time limit.

Once all bets are placed, the dealer distributes the cards. You will receive two cards face up. The dealer will receive one card face up (the "upcard") and one card face down (the "hole card").

If the dealer's upcard is an Ace, you may be offered Insurance. This is a side bet that the dealer has a 10-value hole card (a Blackjack). Statistically, taking insurance is generally a losing play in the long run unless you are actively counting cards and know the deck is rich in 10s.

2. The Objective

The goal of Blackjack is simple: beat the dealer. You achieve this by getting a hand total closer to 21 than the dealer, without going over 21 (busting). You do NOT need to reach 21 to win; you only need a higher total than the dealer, or for the dealer to bust.

  • Cards 2-10: Worth their face value.
  • Face Cards (J, Q, K): Worth 10.
  • Aces: Worth 1 or 11, whichever benefits your hand more. A "Soft" hand contains an Ace counted as 11 (e.g., A-6 is a Soft 17).

3. Your Actions

Hit

Take another card from the dealer to increase your hand's total value. You can continue hitting until you decide to stand, or until your total exceeds 21 (Bust).

Stand

Keep your current hand and end your turn. Once you stand, you wait for the dealer to play their hand.

Double Down

Double your initial bet, receive exactly one more card, and then automatically stand. This is mathematically powerful when you have a strong starting total (like 10 or 11) against a weak dealer upcard (like 5 or 6).

Split Crucial Strategy

If your first two cards have the same value (e.g., two 8s), you can split them into two separate hands by placing a second equal bet. You will then play each hand independently.

Special Rule for Aces: When you split Aces, you usually only receive one additional card per Ace, and an Ace + 10-value card after a split is counted as 21, not a natural Blackjack.

Surrender (Late Surrender)

Give up half your bet and end the hand immediately. This is usually allowed only on your first two cards after the dealer checks for Blackjack. It's a key defensive move for terrible hands (like 16 against a dealer's 10).
